During COVID-19 many small businesses in Detroit struggled to pivot to online sales and had to create a digital presence from scratch. While the original Design Guide for Neighborhood Business focused on the design of a brick and mortar store, this updated version includes information about the importance of digital design.

I worked with the Design Core team to update old sections and develop new content to expand the digital design section. I synthesized big ideas and notes taken from interactive sessions with local business leaders into clear narratives that provide practical knowledge and advice for small and medium business owners who want to create their online presence from scratch or improve what they already have. I used my personal experience with digital marketing along with independent research on topics I’m not intimately familiar with to create this content.
Once the copy had been finalized I edited the entire book for grammar and flow, working hand-in-hand with Graphic Designer Angela Ficorell to ensure the narratives were complimented with proper images and graphics. The final result is an easy to understand guide that will help Detroit businesses continue to thrive.
My favorite part of this project was creating case studies showcasing some amazing Detroit businesses that are embracing design, both physical and digital, to reach new audiences. Owners submitted information about their branding or digital projects and I used this content along with independent research to share their stories and inspire other local businesses.
